Reporting a Work Injury in Florida
Tell your employer about a work-related injury as soon as possible. Florida law generally requires notice within 30 days after the injury occurs or first becomes apparent. Exceptions may apply, including when a medical opinion is needed to identify the work-related cause. Late reporting can affect your benefits, so report promptly even if you think the deadline has passed. See Florida's injury reporting law, section 440.185.
Coverage and Prior Authorization
Workers' compensation payment depends on whether the injury is covered under Florida law and whether the services are medically necessary and properly authorized. An initial physical therapy evaluation is not automatically covered. Non-emergency physical therapy generally requires a physician referral and authorization from the workers' compensation carrier before care is provided. A referral alone does not establish carrier authorization or guarantee payment.
Before scheduling at TAG Physical Therapy, ask your claim adjuster or case manager to confirm that TAG is authorized for your claim and that the evaluation and any planned treatment are approved. Confirm the approved services, number of visits, and authorization dates, if applicable. Have your claim number, carrier and adjuster contact information, referral, and available authorization details ready when you call our office.
For covered, authorized care, medical bills are generally submitted to the workers' compensation carrier. Any patient charges must comply with Florida law. For a medical emergency, call 911 or seek emergency care; do not wait for routine authorization.
